The Good.....

Bacillus thuringiensis (bah-sill-us ther-in-gee-in-sis): a.k.a "Bt", a common soil bacterium. Wanted as a natural pest-killer in gardens and on crops.
Lactobacillus acidophilus (lack-toe-bah-sill-us acid-off-ill-us): one of the bacteria gang wanted for turning milk into yogurt.
Pseudomonas putida (sue-doe-moan-us poo-tea-dah): one of many bacteria wanted for cleaning wastes from sewage water at water treatment plants.

Streptomyces (strep-toe-my-seas): soil bacteria wanted for making streptomycin, an antibiotic used to treat infections. Streptomyces also makes the fragrance that we associate with soil.

and The Bad....

Anthrax - (Bacillus anthracis) is very common in wild and domestic animals in some parts of the world. Humans get anthrax by handling infected animals or inhaling the anthrax bacterium. There are three types of disease resulting from anthrax, one that infects the skin, one that infects the respiratory tract, and one that infects the intestines. There is an anthrax vaccine that is 93% effective.
Tuberculosis (TB) - (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) is contagious and is spread through a cough, laugh, or sneeze. A human can carry this bacteria even though they do not exhibit symptoms, and pass it to others. Symptoms include coughing, fever, exhaustion, and weight loss. TB can be treated with certain medications.

Lyme Disease - (Borrelia burgdorferi) is caused by a bacteria that is spread by deer ticks. Humans commonly develop a rash that is circular in shape. Other symptoms include tiredness, aches and pains, and fever. Can cause swelling of the joints, and eventually the swelling of the brain if not treated. Can be treated with antibiotics. Tick Tactics
Malaria - (Plasmodium sp.) is found mostly in warm climates such as Central America, Africa and the Middle East. It is spread by infected mosquitos. Symptoms include fever and flu-like symptoms, the parasites grow in red blood cells and burst open to release the parasite. Can be cured or prevented with specific medications.
The Plague - (Yersinia pestis) is carried by fleas, humans get sick when handling infected animals or when bit by infected fleas. The symptoms are painful swollen lymph nodes, fever, and exhaustion. Can be spread from person to person by coughing, and can be treated with specific medicines.

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever - (Rickettsia rickettsii) is found throughout the United States and is transmitted to humans by ticks. Symptoms include fever, aches and pains, and a rash. If not treated, it is fatal, but can be treated with antibiotics.
