The study of life.

Observe the above photograph.  As far as we know, this is the only place in the universe where life exists, but life is not found everywhere on Earth.  Life is only found in a relatively thin layer around the surface of the Earth:  a layer we call the biosphere.  This thin skin of life, far too thin for its thickness to be measured from even near-Earth orbits, is virtually teeming with living things.  Nearly every square centimeter of the biosphere is packed with life, from the deepest depths of the oceans to the coldest, driest land habitats.  In this course we will study the unity and interdependence of this delicate fabric which covers Earth's surface:  a fabric in which humanity is a small but significant thread.
