Choice and Preference Toileting Assistance (CAPTA) Curriculum and Schedule
This curriculum follows the steps discussed in CAPTA training manual. The sessions were recorded between January and July, 2010, as part of a distance learning project funded by The Retirement Research Foundation of Chicago.

Session 1: Overview of incontinence management; assessing resident preferences. Attendance by nurse aides strongly recommended.

Assignment: Read Overview and Step 1, “Conduct a basic resident evaluation;” interview incontinent residents to assess toileting preferences. Click to access the interview form.

Session 2: Prompted Voiding Procedure and Assessment Trial. Attendance by nurse aides strongly recommended.

Assignment: Read Step 2, “Assess resident responsiveness to prompted voiding;” begin conducting toileting trials with a sample of residents. Click to access the toileting trial form and the trial result form.

Session 3: Staffing for Incontinence Management; Peer Experiences.

Assignment: Read Step 3, “Implement time-saving strategies to maintain prompted voiding.” Continue assessing incontinent residents and maintaining responsive residents on prompted voiding.

Session 4: The Survey Process and Incontinence Management

OBJECTIVES:

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

>> Describe procedures for assessing incontinent nursing home residents.
>> Identify and implement strategies for managing incontinence.
>> Identify and implement staffing strategies for implementing prompted voiding.
>> Describe federal survey guidelines for incontinence care.
>> Continuously monitor and evaluate a toileting assistance program for incontinent residents.
