ASSISTANTSHIPS AND FELLOWSHIPS IN SPEECH PATHOLOGY AND AUDIOLOGY

A. GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPS

All assistantships offered through Speech Pathology and Audiology cover tuition during the academic year and the summer. Furthermore, each assistantship is accompanied by a monthly stipend. Assistantship holders also receive a stipend during the summer provided that they register for classes during the summer sessions. All assistantships are awarded on an annual basis and are not automatically renewed for the second year of study.

Modified assistantships require 8 hours of work per week. Half-time assistantships require 20 hours of work per week.

1.  Modified Graduate Assistantships

The graduate student is teamed up with a faculty supervisor in Speech Pathology and Audiology to work on research and/or teaching projects. Research responsibilities may include literature reviews, data collection, organization, and management, as well as assisting in the preparation of manuscripts and conference presentations. Teaching duties may include grading of papers and projects, organizing and leading small group discussions and labs, and other duties pertaining to a given course.

2.  College of Education Assistantship

Responsibilities for this graduate award from the College of Education include teaching the First Year Undergraduate Seminal course (SPA 193) under the supervision of Mrs. Ann Glaser. In addition, the student will organize speech and hearing screenings for Education majors. This is a 20-hour per week assignment split between the SPA department and the College of Education.

3.  Graduate School Assistantships for English As A Second Language Speakers

These are 20-hour assistantships requiring a strong clinical background. The primary responsibility is to provide foreign accent reduction services to international graduate students at Miami University under the supervision of the Clinic Director.

4.  Sign Language Assistantships

These are 8-hour assistantships that require extensive sign language background. The primary responsibility is to teach two sections of introductory level sign-language classes under the supervision of Dr. Kathleen Hutchinson.

5.      Clinic Assistantship

This is a 20-hour assistantship that requires organization and administrative abilities. The student is responsible for managing and maintaining the materials/supply room in the MU Clinic, scheduling pre-school screenings, and other administrative tasks relating to the clinic under the supervision of the Clinic Director.

 6.      Clinical Trials in TBI

This 20-hour research assistantship provides research support on a funded project designed to assess the effectiveness of a cognitive rehabilitation program in patients with TBI at various clinical sites in the U.S. The student will work under the supervision of Dr. Constantinidou in the Neurocognitive Disorders Lab on managing the clinical trials process, data collection, data management and organization, in order to meet the goals of the clinical trials.

 7.      Categorization Training in Older Adults

This 20-hour research assistantship provides research support on a project funded by the university to provide categorization training to normal older adults in order to improve their cognitive abilities. The student will work under the supervision of Dr. Constantinidou in the Neurocognitive Disorders Lab on recruiting and testing subjects, data management and organization, in order to meet the goals of project.

B. MARY THEW FOWLER FELLOWSHIPS

These two-year fellowships are made available through a generous endowment by Ms. Mary Thew Fowler. They include a tuition waiver for the academic year and the summer and a stipend with no service requirement for the academic year.
