Introduction to Genetics

Historical - Alfred H. Sturtevant conveniently divides the history of genetics into three time frames with respect to the life of Gregor Mendel. There is pre-Mendelian, post-Mendelian and pre-rediscovery, and post-rediscovery of Mendels work.

  1. Pre-Mendelian - BC>1860 - This covers the great animal and plant domesticators of the past. A great body of work was done that is truly before recorded history.
  2. Inter-Mendelian - 1860 - 1900 -or post-Mendelian to pre-rediscovery. Unfortunately Mendels contributions of 1865 were not known throught out the scientific world requiring a rediscovery of his work by Hugo Devries, Carl Correns, Erich von Tschermak at the turn of the last century.
  3. Post-rediscovery of Mendels work or the 20 th Century.
