Pre-Lab Question:

Gamma Ray Spectroscopy

  1. Below you are given the energies of gamma transitions emitted by nucleus XX.  When those gamma rays interact with the NaI(Tl) detector described in the write-up for this lab, the individual gamma rays themselves may be directly detected.  However, other interactions with the detector are also possible.  Such interactions will give rise to features in the recorded spectrum other than well defined gamma ray peaks.  For each gamma ray listed below, identify what type(s) of gamma ray/detector interaction(s) is (are) possible, and at what energies you would look for them in the recorded spectrum. Briefly describe the physics behind each interaction.

  2.
