Seminars and Workshops
The Pre-Law Program offers a variety of seminars, workshops, and events throughout the academic year for students at all stages of pre-law exploration. These programs are designed to educate students about the legal profession, assist them in preparing for the LSAT, and provide them with the resources needed to succeed in the law school application and admissions process. Some of our seminars and events include:
"Paying for Law School"
(January 22)
Jeffrey E. Hanson, Ph.D., the president and founder of Jeffrey Hanson Education Services, is a leading expert on higher education financial literacy, borrower education and debt management. In this presentation, Dr. Hanson discussed how to apply for financial aid, strategies for being a smart borrower, how to budget plan, developing plans for loan repayment, and how to manage law school debt while reaching your professional and financial goals.

Exploring A Career In Law
(PLW 101, 1 credit)
This presentation gave me a new perspective on the roles and responsibilities of prosecutors. I am so glad to have had the opportunity to learn more about them, and could see myself pursuing a career as a prosecutor.
This seminar is geared toward first and second year students potentially interested in attending law school. The Director serves as an instructor for this one-credit course, which exposes students to various legal career paths through guest speakers, and provides an overview of the law school admissions process.
Junior Seminar: Simulated LSAT and Strategy Session
(March 2)
A full-length LSAT diagnostic exam was given. Registrants received exam results and participated in a strategy session with a professional Kaplan instructor.
Junior Seminar: Applying to Law School
(April 3)
We discussed resume and personal statement basics, how to research law schools, prepare a law school list, and other law school application issues. This allowed students to get a head start on the application process. We also discussed the benefits of enrolling in PLW 401: Preparing for a Career in Law, a new one-credit Fall senior sprint course developed to assist seniors through the Fall law school application process.
Preparing for a Career in Law
(PLW 401, 1 credit)
This course is designed for seniors who are trying to navigate their way through the law school admission process.
It covered all aspects, and really made certain issues a priority over others. I really understood what I have to get done.
Part I: Personal Statement Basics
In this session students will receive a general overview of the purpose of the personal statement, including the dos and don’ts. Students will be urged to begin formulating ideas and prepare a draft of their personal statement.- Part II: Step-By-Step Overview
During this session, we will walk through the law school application process, step-by-step. You will learn to use the Law School Admission Council’s online services, as well as the Law School Data Assembly Service to access, complete, and submit applications online. We will discuss other important aspects of your application, such as letters of recommendation and your personal statement. - Part III: Personal Statement Workshop
Consultants from the Howe Center for Writing Excellence will work with applicants in small groups to improve upon their draft personal statements. Applicants must come to this session with a prepared draft. - Part IV: Law School Admissions Panel
Join admissions representatives from law schools as they answer your questions about law school admissions.
