We at the Karl E. Limper Geology Museum feel that ensuring a high-quality education is as important as sparking interest about geology. Therefore, our activities and links strive toward the educational benchmarks defined by the Academic Content Standards. The Limper Geology Museum encourages educators to engage in geologic activities both in the field and in the classroom.

In the Field

Each summer, the Improving Teacher Quality State Grants Program, funded by the Ohio Board of Regents provides tuition, room, and board for 77 Ohio elementary school teachers and up to 8 elementary school administrators—while they are in residence at Miami University's Geology Field Station and 4-H Camp Ohio. Participants study in and near Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks.

The purpose of this program is to train elementary school teachers to use environmental science across the curriculum to attain Ohio academic content standards and acheivement test outcomes. Scientific content will emphasize the following: energy in the environment; biological cycling of carbon, nitrogen, and water; management of land and water; creation of rocks and landscapes; geologic time and fossils; and the diversity and adaptations of plants and animals.

This course provides five semester hours of Miami University graduate credit that may be transferred to another university or college.

Unfortunately, this program did not receive the necessary funding for the summer of 2010. Check back later to see if it is more successful in the future.

In the Classroom

For your ease, we have divided classroom activities into three groups based on age. Note, however, that the activities span multiple ages so some are appropriate for multiple groups.
