"Hi, I'm Stephanie Brock. As a Spanish and Latin American Studies major, I have had many opportunities to have a unique college experience. I studied in Yucatan, Mexico, where I improved my Spanish and learned how to be independent. This year, during spring break, I returned to Yucatan to work on an undergraduate research project about the mixing of the Spanish, English, and Maya languages.I am an executive officer of the Association of Latin and American Students (ALAS), which is a student organization dedicated to promoting awareness about Latino culture and issues facing the Latino community. Thanks to funding from various Miami departments and programs, ALAS members attended the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute national conference in Chicago, where we learned how to be strong, committed leaders.
I also gained valuable volunteer and work experience through Living Water Ministry where I was a role model for young students.
There is so much more to college than just taking classes. I have formed real friendships with my professors and peers because I am studying a subject that I have always and will always love. I am excited to be involved on and off campus and feel like I have really made a difference. Can every college graduate say that? Probably not, but I'm glad that I can and it is due to the amazing faculty and staff of the LAS department, the wide variety of classes I've taken and all of the life-changing opportunities that MU offers!"
