In fall 2011, Sarah talked about her time at Miami University.
"My family is very important to me and we spend every waking minute of the day outside in our backyard or exploring local nature preserves. I maintain a positive outlook on life and I try to bring creativity to all aspects of my life.
"Last year I studied and lived in Europe for 8 months and then backpacked throughout western and northern Europe with a group of Spanish friends. It was one of the best and most rewarding experiences of my life! "
General Interests
"I enjoy traveling, speaking Spanish, and doing anything that involves literature and creative expression. One of my favorite pastimes is experiencing and participating in foreign culture, especially the dance and gastronomy aspects of them! After this past summer, I must admit two of my new favorite foods are eel and octopus!"
Academic & Co-curricular Experiences
"I participated in the Oviedo, Spain, study abroad program during the spring and summer 2011, during which I hiked 200 km on The Way of Saint James, a pilgrimage through northern Spain. This summer I will return to Spain to be a pilgrim guide on the same route that I hiked.
"I'm an active member in the Latin American Student Organization, the salsa dancing team, and a member of Lambda Sigma service fraternity."
Impact I Hope to Make on Miami
"Through my participation in DSAC and other co-curricular activities and just by being a student, I hope that I can help expand the open-mindedness of students and staff. I would like to preserve the phenomenal experience I've had at Miami so that generations of future Miami students can attain academic and lifelong success."
Thoughts on Representing My Peers
"I'm proud to have the opportunity to share my thoughts as well as to be a representative for the profoundly diverse student population within the College of Arts and Science, and I hope that my efforts will help contribute to the continued excellence of all."
Other Leadership Experiences
"I participated in the program U-Lead, which promotes and builds leadership and teamwork skills among peers.
"Although this is not a typical leadership experience, I participated in the first year of the Oviedo, Spain, program and provided feedback for the future of the program; I also worked with the program's director to help make those changes possible."
My Plans for the Future
"After graduation I hope to pursue my doctorate and become a college professor. I haven't decided if I want to be a Spanish professor in the U.S. or an English professor in Spain. I'd also like to publish a novel someday, although I am not sure what it's going to be about yet!"
