"Hi! My name is Anne Golembeski and I am a senior history major and environmental principles and practice co-major [now sustainability co-major]. As an incoming freshman I knew I wanted to be a history major, but it was not until sophomore year that the co-major fell into my lap. When I picked up the co-major, I was not so sure that it would fit with history, but I've found that these two academic interests have complemented each other quite well. In some classes, like American Environmental History, the connection between the two is obvious. But in other classes where the connection is not so clear, I've been able to connect material from courses in geography, geology, and even gerontology to my studies in history and vice versa."
Earth Day 5K and Green Screen
"I'm involved in Miami's student environmental group, Green Oxford. We do a number of projects throughout the year to promote sustainability in the Miami and Oxford communities. I've personally been involved in organizing our annual Earth Day 5K for the past two years and, recently, Green Oxford has partnered with the Interfaith Climate Change Working Group to put on Green Screen. Green Screen presents films and videos about the science, art, and spirituality of the natural environment. Green Oxford is also working on other projects, such as the 'Take Back the Tap' campaign, to promote reusable water bottle usage on campus."
Sustainability in Europe
"I had the opportunity to study in Copenhagen, Denmark, where my studies focused on sustainability in Europe. Copenhagen is known for its biking culture, and Denmark is known for its success in harnessing wind power. My professors were able to take us outside of the classroom and show us first-hand how and why European cities have been able to take on green initiatives. I absolutely loved studying and living in Copenhagen for a semester; it was a great extension of my studies at Miami."
