Meet Some of Our New Faculty 2012-13

Elise Clerkin
Department of Psychology
Dr. Clerkin (PhD, University of Virginia) is interested in developing and testing computerized interventions that focus on targeting key cognitive mechanisms in anxiety disorders, as well as brief interventions that integrate mindfulness-based techniques.
Linh Le Dich
Department of English
Dr. Dich's (PhD, University of Massachusetts, Amherst) research includes Digital Writing, Critical Race Theory, Asian-American Rhetoric, and theories of public(s) and community imaginaries. She is interested in bringing these seemingly disparate fields together for pedagogical purposes. As an educator who views the classroom as a hybrid public sphere, she explores how issues of representation, difference and power are related and generated both inside and outside of classrooms.
Caleb Eckhardt
Department of Mathematics
Dr. Eckhardt’s (PhD, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) research interests are operator algebras.
Meredith Cline Erb
Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry
Dr. Erb (PhD, Johns Hopkins University) is interested in chemical education with a focus on organic chemistry. Her research interests involve the use of analytical techniques for the detection of reactive intermediates and the application of physical organic methods to solve biologically relevant problems.
Ziying Jiang
Department of Geography
Dr. Jiang's (PhD, Clark University) research interests focus on modeling and simulation of land use/land cover change and road network expansion using Geographic Information System. She is also interested in studying Ohio agriculture using the Geographically Weighted Regression method. Dr. Jiang will be teaching Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) courses.
Byron Miller
Department of Sociology and Gerontology
Dr. Miller (PhD, Florida State University) comes to Miami as a joint appointment in the Black World Studies Program and the Department of Sociology and Gerontology at the Hamilton Campus.
John Philip Rode Schaefer
Department of Anthropology
Dr. Schaefer (PhD, University of Texas at Austin) taught previously at the American University in Cairo, Egypt. He is interested in Arab cultures, in particular, the music of the Gnawa, a religious group in Morocco that identifies with the descendants of formerly enslaved West Africans. He also studies linguistic anthropology and new communication technologies.
April Smith
Department of Psychology
Dr. Smith's (PhD, Florida State University) research focuses on the biological and psychological risk factors for eating disorders and suicidal behavior, with a particular focus on the high rates of suicidality and self-injury among individuals with eating disorders.
Joshua Wagner
Department of Mathematics
Mr. Wagner earned his M.S. in Mathematics from Miami University in 2009. From 2009-2012, he taught in the mathematics department as an instructor before becoming a lecturer this fall. His teaching areas include pre-calculus and calculus, while his mathematical interests include algebra and graph theory.
