Entrance Requirements

Incoming students are expected to have completed a bachelor's degree and to have taken courses in the following areas:

  • general and organic chemistry
  • physics
  • biology courses appropriate to student's interest

Students who do not meet the minimum course requirements may be required to make up any deficiencies with appropriate undergraduate courses or by directed readings accompanied by examinations.

Other Requirements

  • official application to Miami University Graduate School
  • official GRE scores
  • unofficial transcripts
  • official TOEFL scores, if applicable
  • three (3) letters of recommendation
  • letter of interest identifying at least three faculty members as potential advisors
  • 1-2 page résumé or academic CV

Program Requirements

Course Requirements

  • CMSB seminar
  • pedagogy training
  • one course from three of four core areas:
    • biochemistry
    • cell biology
    • molecular biology
    • structural biology
  • additional seminars and courses as determined by the student and committee

Diagnostic Examinations

All Ph.D. students must pass a comprehensive examination and write and defend a dissertation research proposal. All M.S. students must write and defend a thesis proposal. All students must present and defend their final dissertation or thesis.
