Black World Studies at Miami University
A Message from the Director
Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year. We are excited to have you as part of the Black World Studies family. Every faculty member has been working very hard to prepare for your return. We have set very high expectations and made plans to guarantee that every student in the BWS Program will be successful this school year.
Your academic success is the main goal of every faculty member in the BWS Program. We believe that every student will learn to the highest level and we are prepared to offer more time and support to every student that needs it.
Last year we added Dr. Byron Miller to our Hamilton faculty. He is a dedicated teacher and scholar that already is significantly adding to our presence on the regional campuses. His scholarly interests include sociology of deviance, crime and race.
We welcome back Dr. Tammy Brown, who has completed a fantastic sabbatical at the University of North Carolina. Her presence strengthens our offerings in history, media, and feminist studies.
Continuing you will find a full range of scholar teachers that provide instruction in English and history, art and music, social justice and political science, geography and education, the classics and the sciences.
You might be interested in our summer course, which takes students to Paris and England to explore African-American influences in history and the arts. Our own Mr. Adrian Gaskins offers this course.
One of the exciting new additions to our curriculum will be a 6-credit study abroad to Ghana (entitled Ghana: Black Star Rising [PDF]) during the Winter J-Term. This course, offered by Dr. Cyril Daddieh, will explore the political, social, and cultural institutions that have made Ghana one of the leading African states to emerge onto the world scene. As the semester proceeds, come back and see the latest developments in these and other offerings.
The beginning of a new academic year is a time for reflection and resolution. I know that, as members of this exceptional community of dedicated students, scholars, and teachers moves forward, we will continue to pursue excellence in teaching, research, and public service. We are dedicated to ensuring that you have a wonderful experience as you pursue your academic goals.
