American Studies at Miami University
A Message from the Director - May 2012
(Note: Dr. Peggy Shaffer, Director of American Studies, is on research leave for Spring 2013.)
Dear Friends and AMS Supporters,
2011-12 has been a great year for American Studies. Our core faculty continue to work as engaged scholars who enhance the intellectual life of the university. Our students are succeeding in the classroom and beyond. And AMS students, faculty, and alumni are working together to build and sustain a supportive community that will serve as a network and resource for all of us in the years to come.
AMS had 22 majors and 9 minors graduate this year. They move on to jobs ranging from finance to theater, marketing to museum work. In addition AMS graduates have secured admission to graduate programs in library science and student affairs in higher education. We wish our AMS graduates all the best as they move into this new phase of their lives beyond Miami. Congratulations to AMS graduating majors Adam Abt, Shavonne Alexander, Christopher Beitz, Ian Blake, Betsy Burch, Samatha Chyette, Kelly DiTurno, John Dunn, Julianne George, Jillian Kohorst, Mei Han Lee, C. J. Marck, Will Mielnicki, Meghan Moore, Andrew Schneider, Christober Seitz, Justin Slauter, Keina Smith-McDowell, Michael Solomon, Joseph Torretta, Joseph Warren, and Alicia Williams; and AMS graduating minors Matthew Brandewie, Alyssa Johansen, Alyssa Kozlow, Lawton Lovely, Kendall McQuay, Tucker Merkle, Lindsay Swift, Geoff Stafford, and Clark Tanner.
Congratulations also to professor Sheila Croucher, who received the Miami University Distinguished Scholar Award; professor Oana Godeanu-Kenworthy, who spent the spring semester as a fellow at the Library of Congress, and professor Kimberly Hamlin, who received the Miami University Sigma Alpha Pi Excellence in Teaching Award.
We commend the Society for American Studies Students (SASS), which supported a series of events including sponsoring a visit by AMS alumna Jennifer Sandel, Retail Sales Representative for Nestle USA and member of Nestle's national Sales Development Program. Sandel returned to Miami to give a well-attended presentation about the benefits of interdisciplinary critical thinking skills for ongoing professional development.
We look forward to welcoming new students and faculty in the fall, including our Heanon Wilkins Fellow Dr. Sande Garner who will join us as an assistant professor in American Studies.
Best,
Peggy Shaffer
Director of American Studies
