Kara in Kosova

Text Transcript

(In this video Kara Ferguson (Senior, double major in Psychology and Journalism) talks about how a study abroad experience affected her.)

"I was told that going abroad would change you: that you become more mature, that you just become a different person. And you kind of don't think that when you're going abroad at all. You don't think it's going to change you. You think that you're going to stay the same, and you'll come back and everything's just the way it was. Just the way you left it.

But I had a guy tell me in Kosova that we have to realize that (or that I had to realize) that I had been changed, that I am somehow more mature, that my experiences in Kosova have changed me from who I was — mostly for the better. And that going back here is not going to be the same: that your friends aren't going to have the same views as you anymore or your views have changed from your friends' points of view. And I can't blame them for changing because I'm the one that's changed.

And so, I think what a lot of people don't realize is that you really do change when you go abroad. It's a great experience because you see the world from a different perspective. And that's what you want to do. You don't want to be closed-minded or anything like that. You want to see the world from a new perspective. You want to see different cultures and the struggles that they go through and, I think, that's what's so great about Kosova ... or that what was so great about Kosova was that we were there and we lived their struggles. We knew the struggles that they had every day. And so I really got to see the world more than just like a tourist, but just a person that lived there. And so, I definitely think that Kosova changed me. But I think it changed me for the better, and I'm so happy I did it. It was a wonderful experience and I would do it again in a heartbeat."
