Asian/Asian American Studies at Miami University
Welcome from the Director
January 2013
Welcome to the Asian/Asian American Studies Program at Miami, an interdisciplinary program that applies a transnational and transcultural lens to critical inquiries into important issues both affecting and connecting Asia and Asian America and that prepares students to become global citizens of the twenty-first century.
The program studies how the historical, socio-cultural, and political forces shape our understanding and knowledge about people of Asian and Pacific Islander heritage in the United States and in the diaspora. It aims to develop new paradigms and perspectives to close down past divisions and boundaries and to open up space for dialogue and engagement.
Guided by its mission statement, and building on the successful launch of a the minor, the Asian/Asian American Studies Program is currently collaborating with other cognate units on campus to develop a new major, identifying and recruiting more core and affiliate faculty, working with Asian/Asian American students and other campus organizations to promote cultural and linguistic diversity, and building a coalition of faculty who share curricular and scholarly interests in Asia and Asian America.
In these modern and dynamic times, the significance of both transnational and transcultural understanding will not only endure, but escalate. As such, the mission of this program is an important one. I am proud to be a part of the Asian/Asian American Studies Program at Miami, and I look forward to meeting and working with all of you in the coming academic year.
