Phy 441/54:  Optics & Laser Physics
Laboratory Manual

Lab 1:  Manipulation of Optics

Necessary Optics:
Set-up on table before lab:
1.  HeNe Laser
2.  Iris aperture
3.  PIN photodiode detector and multimeter

** These should be placed on optics table/bread board with laser at one height and the iris and photodiode at another height.  For instance, my laser is at 10 cm from the table top and the center of the iris and detector active area is at either 7 or 14 cm from the table top.  The iris aperture is about 12 cm from the detector and both are angled away from the HeNe.  The idea is to force the student to use 2 mirrors to change the height and direction of the beam and have it propagate into the detector through the iris aperture.

Available on Table for use during lab:
4. 3 or 4 mirrors in mounts
5.  neutral density filter holders
6.  neutral density filters
7.  lens holder
8.  selection of converging lenses
9.   posts and post holders for various optics
10.  tie down clamps and 1/4-20 screws for everything
11.  beam blocks and cards for aligning optics
12.  rulers (6")
